UC Berkeley's Spring 2024 Friedman Visiting Professor of Practice Rozana Montiel is founder and director of the Mexico City-based firm Rozana Montiel Estudio de Arquitectura (REA). We sat down with her at CED's Haven's House to learn more about her practice, and the graduate option studio titled Barrio Chino-Chinatown, which she was teaching with Thomas de Monchaux at the time. UC Berkeley's CED Fab Shop is a fully equipped wood and metal shop available to graduate and undergraduate students. In order to improve visibility and usage of the shop for current and prospective students, we made this reel. It features Frederic Lam (M.Arch 2025) as he prepares his 1:1 model for his thesis review, and the various areas of the shop he finds himself in throughout that process. As students gear up each semester for their reviews, they explore their designs through a wide array of modalities. Throughout the year, we documented their work, whether it be late night model building, pin-ups or anything else. Students work in the shop, discuss and assemble in studio, and ideate during desk crits. It is dynamic and diverse lifestyle. Produced by Marina Mezhibovsky
Jono Cole (M.Arch 2024)'s thesis Approaching Value interrogates the boundaries of architectural value systems. The project examines how the same building can be zoned in a variety of different ways through minor obfuscations in representation. After his review, he spent some time telling us more about his project, as well as his experience in UC Berkeley's M.Arch program. Produced by Marina Mezhibovsky
CED's Digital Fabrication Lab (CED) is a student makerspace with a wide range of tools for students to use including a ZUND, laser cutters, 3D printers, and a CNC machine. We made this reel to get students and applicants excited about the resources available to them in the architecture program, not only in terms of machines, but the hands-on training and support from staff to help craft, model, and actualize their work. It was through this lens of support that the reel was filmed. Produced by Marina Mezhibovsky
Mauricio Pezo and Sofia von Ellrichshausen were Friedman Visiting Professors of Practice in the spring of 2024, and run an architectural practice out of their home in Chile. We sat down with them to learn more about their methodology and get a sneak peak into the graduate option studio they were teaching. Produced by Marina Mezhibovsky
At the end of each semester, students present their work before a panel of professors and practicing architects, they receive feedback on their work, not only in content, but in narrative and presentation as well. It is a lively event and an integral part of the student learning process. Produced by Marina Mezhibovsky
Marlon Blackwell and his wife Ati Blackwell are the driving forces behind Marlon Blackwell architects, who have shown a remarkable ability to create compelling projects with limited budgets. We spoke with them about their practice, upcoming lecture, and Marlon's history as a bible book salesman, among other things. Produced by Marina Mezhibovsky
Jonah Susskind was hosted by Room 1000, UCÂ Berkeley's environmental design and architecture publication, to talk about his work documenting environments and ecologies through satellite photographs. We talked with him to learn more about his practice, and the love for photography which helped inspire it. Produced by Marina Mezhibovsky
